ProteCoat®
additives, as the name implies, protect coatings and the environment from unwanted organisms. As biologically inspired antimicrobials, the ProteCoat enzymes and peptides under development are safe to handle and environmentally friendly. The RSL family of peptides and enzymes are polymers of amino acids which are fast acting and broad-spectrum. It is this potential that RSL has tapping into order to develop a new generation of antimicrobial additives for coatings with its ProteCoat product line.Our research has shown that ProteCoat additives are effective biocides for coatings in-processing, in-the-can, and in-the-film (on painted surfaces). Our research has shown that they can be used alone or synergistically in combination with existing biocides to quickly and effectively kill algae, fungi and bacteria, including the spore stages of such microorganisms, as well as certain viruses. ProteCoat additives offer substantial advantages over the traditional biocidal and biostatic chemicals presently used in coatings. They are biodegradable, work under mild conditions, provide safe alternatives to existing biocides, and are not associated with the production or release of hazardous compounds to the environment.
ProteCoat additives are being bioengineered to exhibit selective toxicity and rapid killing of microorganisms over a broad antimicrobial spectrum. RSL is at the leading edge of this “Green Revolution” in biocide manufacturing.
Since the ProteCoat additives are designed to work alone or synergistically in combination with existing biocides, the use of these peptide-based additives can be integrated with biocidal product offerings of biocide manufacturers. The large number of potential applications for these “Green” biocides, including housing, surfaces in hospitals, schools, government facilities, industrial sites, and public transportation systems, will expand the types of coatings into which the ProteCoat additives may be used.
